Case Study 2

Project: To offload from others transport a dismantled theatre stage lift, move to inside theatre across timber stage and lower into a 3.5 metre deep pit.

Site: Lincoln School of Performing Arts.

Equipment To be installed: A 3 section hydraulic scissor lift, heaviest item 3000 kgs.

Projector equipment utilised: 2 x 3tonne capacity Lightweight Aluminium gantries and suitable trolleys and chainhoists. PLS special guided skidding track. PLS Nylon rolling systems.

1. Site survey

Prior to commencement of work a full site survey was carried out with the client to determine the method of installation and to highlight any problems or hazards which may require control measures.

Access doors are measured to ensure clearances during the moving in of the lift parts.

The pit is measured for accuracy and clearance on the lift and to determine a suitable gantry for lifting the theatre lift sections into place.

Tolerences need to be measured accurately

2. Setting up of Installation eqpt.

Our steel skidding track is set up outside the building, running through the access door before being joined with further tracks for the turn inside.

Further sections are bolted together to provide a continuous runway from outside to across the stage, and a method of changing direction was incorporated into the system so that sections could be moved to the pit area at the front of the stage.

Suitable capacity lightweight Aluminium gantries were erected above the pit area to allow the sections to be lifted from the skidding track and lowered into the pit area.

3. Installation

Sections were craned off outside the Theatre onto our Nylon rolling system, which rolled along the guided skidding track system. The co-efficient of rolling friction was so low that the sections were able to be moved by hand at all times.

Sections were then jacked up and the nylon rolling system turned through 90 degrees to enable movement of the sections to a location above the pit and under the gantries.

Finally the sections were lifted clear of the skidding track, which was then withdrawn, allowing the sections to be lowered to basement level and final position

Theatre lift successfully installed

Whilst Projector didn’t play to a full house … their performance was outstanding.
